Getting older in age? Know someone who is outliving their current kitchen setup as it fast approaches obsolescence? Well, we also know of these situations dearly, so we wanted to share some insights as to what has worked well for us as well as for our close friends.
For my husband and I, our kitchen was an area in which we need for enjoying the simpler moments in life. We still enjoy sitting at the table and reading the (ahem) paper! The morning is a beautiful time for my husband and I to start the day together and bask in the rising sun while perched in our cozy kitchen dining area. One day, my hubby told me that the floor in the kitchen often made his feet quite cold, thus making the day start, well, not so great anymore. We fancied the idea of a heated floor- do they have such a thing? We exclaimed. Later, I found myself becoming weary of getting on a step ladder to get the large pots which we kept at the very top of our cabinets. He even inquired- wouldn't it be easier to have those under the cabinets so you do not have to climb so precariously high to reach them? The point was taken dually. Soon, we began toying with the idea of renovating this once blissful kitchen of ours, as it seemed to becoming a burden to our growing age. We protested at first, should this really be necessary? After all, we are not that old are we? After discussing with some friends, they assured us that age was not the issue, and that many people have need changes over the years. "Your kitchen must be a place of solitude no matter what age, state, or condition you are in, now or ever!" They made us feel better, and we agreed that a full remodel of this area was indeed necessary. We contacted a local kitchen remodeling contractor near Wilmington and he gave us a very reasonable quote, along with design plans that we could place some of our own input. The process went very smoothly, and we eagerly awaited our new hardwood floors that would not be so cold in the morning, as well as our new cabinet layout that kept us away from the step ladder. After the project was complete, we both looked at each other and said, almost simultaneously " why didn't we do this years ago?" Chuckling hardily, we embraced in our new kitchen and have since enjoyed the new design and renovated aspects with delight.
